Mission: To increase awareness about chemical dependency and related issues while recognizing and respecting the cultural distinctions of the Akwesasne community, by providing quality services that focus on increasing protective factors and decreasing risk factors. By providing prevention services that promote a safe and healthy lifestyle for individuals, families and community through education, presentations, resources, referrals, and school based intervention/prevention services.
The Alcoholism Chemical Dependency Prevention Program’s mission is to increase awareness about chemical dependency while recognizing and respecting the cultural distinctions of the Akwesasne community. Addiction is preventable and research has shown that prevention programs involving schools, families, communities and the media are effective for preventing and/or reducing drug use and addiction.
The A/CDP Prevention Program provides services such as Too Good for Drugs curriculum for Head start to Grade 7, educational presentations, drug free community events, media campaigns, monthly prevention trips, parent education, suicide prevention and adolescent education. The Intervention services at Salmon River Central school is designed to help our Native youth whose lives have been affected by substance use. By meeting one on one with youth we are able to provide education, offer support and make referrals to appropriate programs when necessary. The prevention program offers one trip each month to expose youth in Akwesasne to new, exciting, and culturally diverse activities. The goal of the monthly activities is to increase self-esteem, social skills and reduce the onset of alcohol and drug use.
The A/CDP Prevention Program staff are members of the Akwesasne Coalition for Community Empowerment. The mission of the Akwesasne Coalition is Skatne ionkwa’shatstenhsera:ien—Together we have strength. Bringing our minds and community resources together to empower our community and its members to live healthy drug and alcohol free lives by modeling a strong positive foundation for our future generations.
