AKWESASNE — The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council issued a precautionary evacuation order this afternoon for the flood area located along the St. Regis River. The precautionary evacuation order is in response to increasing water levels monitored by the USGS at Brasher Center and observations by local first responders.
The evacuation order is a precautionary measure and not mandatory however, residents in the flood area are encouraged to exercise caution. The precautionary evacuation order is in effect for 72 hours and extends from the Helena/North Road to the norther border of the Tribe’s jurisdiction.
Affected residents should follow the instructions contained in the flood preparedness brochure; including gathering family medications, valuable documents, and several changes of clothing.
When evacuating, residents should turn off the electricity at the breaker box, if possible. Do not attempt if there is standing water near the electric box.
