(The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe is proud to provide employment opportunities for high school and college students through the Department of Education’s Summer Youth and Career Internship Employment Program. To help report on this initiative, we are proud to share the following summer student spotlight, which reports on internships in areas specific to the student’s chosen career path.)
AKWESASNE – Tim Cook Jr (he/him), 21, attends Syracuse University at the College of Arts and Sciences as a double major. He is majoring in both Psychology and History, with a minor in Human Development & Family Science. It is his goal to become either a mental health therapist or a psychiatrist and work in Akwesasne to help the people of his community.
When asked about who he is as a person, Tim describes himself as someone who tries his best to be a good son and older brother. He enjoys playing sports such as soccer and hockey, working out to better himself and playing video games when he has the time.
He is currently an intern in the Mental Health department. While working in the clinic, he has had to take trainings to better understand the patients he will be working with. Tim is able to sit in with patients, attend meetings, and learn the work that goes into SRMT’s Mental Health - Kanikonri:ihne (Good Mind Counseling).
