Public Comments sought on Water Quality Standards

Wallking Groups

Akwesasne, NY — In September 2007, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe became the first tribe in Region 2 (NY, NJ, and Puerto Rico) to implement U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-approved Water Quality Standards. Utilizing the federal Clean Water Act, the Tribe administers various sections of the act to manage ambient water quality, non-point source pollutants, construction activities, and direct discharges to waters of the reservation. The purpose of the Water Quality Standards is to protect the Tribe’s unique designation and use of surface and groundwater for the benefit of tribal members and future generations.

As required by law, the Water Quality Standards must be updated every three years to regulate emerging pollutants, refinement of existing standards, and account for updated science. Therefore, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe's Environment Division is currently seeking public comments on proposed revisions to the Water Quality Standards. The Standards can be downloaded from the Environment Division website at the following address: www.srmtenv.org.

Please send written comments to Tony David, Program Manager of Water Resources, 412 State Route 37, Akwesasne, NY 13655 or email to Tony.David@srmt-nsn.gov by close of business on Monday, Seskéha/August 22, 2016.
