AKWESASNE — The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Compliance Department is notifying individuals who are non-members that fishing in Akwesasne’s territorial waters is an inherent and protected right of tribal members. Any non-members seeking to fish in Akwesasne must possess a Non-Member Fishing Permit pursuant to the Non-Member Fishing Permit Regulation and Law (TCR #2011-52).
In 2014, tribal fishermen voiced their support for an amendment to the regulation specifying that non-members not be permitted to fish upstream from the mouth of the St. Lawrence River through the Tribe's jurisdiction until June 1st of each year, which includes the St. Regis River and Raquette River. They further voiced that non-members may not fish during a closed season for any species.
The Non-Member Fishing Permit Regulation and Law is enforced by the Tribe’s Compliance Department and any violations may result in a fine and the fishing permit being revoked.
Non-Member Fishing Permits are available for an annual fee of $40 (U.S.) from the Tribe’s Compliance Department; located on the third floor of the Community Building at 412 State Route 37 in Akwesasne.
If you have any questions, please contact the Compliance Department at (518) 358-2272.
