AKWESASNE -- The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Clerk is pleased to announce that Kayla Herne has been appointed as the new Deputy Tribal Clerk. Tribal Clerk Summer Bero confirmed her appointment through Tribal Council Resolution 2022-30, which Tribal Council approved following the election of former-Deputy Tribal Clerk Derrick King as Tribal Sub-Chief.

“It is a true honor to be able to serve the community of Akwesasne,” shared new-Deputy Tribal Clerk Kayla Herne. Herne added, “I want to thank Tribal Clerk Summer Bero, Sub-Chief Derrick King, Membership Officer Larri-Lee Skidders, and Administrative Assistant Annabelle Mitchell for their continued support throughout this transition and I hope to continue to serve the community effectively.”

Kayla earned a Master’s Degree in Business Management, with distinction, from the State University of New York at Potsdam in May 2020. Since October 2020, she has worked in the Tribal Clerk’s Office as the Administrative Assistant, where she became intimately familiar with the assorted services it provides to the Akwesasne community.

Her previous tasks included helping with the day-to-day functions of the Tribal Clerks Office; such as researching and processing membership applications, generating data and reports, assisting community members in building family trees, and processing identification card renewals, among other assignments.

As the Deputy Tribal Clerk, Kayla’s responsibilities have expanded to provide administrative support to the Tribal Clerk in accordance with the 2013 Tribal Procedures Act, as well as assisting with tribal elections and referendums, recording tribal meetings and work sessions, processing land transactions, updating and maintaining applicable databases, and fulfilling other responsibilities in the Tribal Clerk’s absence.

“I offer my sincerest congratulations to Kayla on her successful appointment as the Tribe’s new Deputy Tribal Clerk. The past few years have revealed her desire to work towards better serving the Akwesasne community, which she will do admirably in her new position,” shared Summer Bero, SRMT Tribal Clerk.
