AKWESASNE — With Halloween only a few days away, The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Emergency Operations Center is reminding everyone about this year's annual Trunk-or-Treat event being held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, October 30th. Conducted by the Akwesasne Coalition for Community Empowerment, this year’s event is a safe option being provided as an alternative to the normal trick-or-treating experience.
For those who will be participating in the Trunk-or-Treat event, please keep in mind the following procedures to make the event safe and enjoyable:
- Event is limited to community members only,
- Please enter Margaret Terrance Memorial Way from McGee Road,
- Participants must stay in their vehicles for the duration of the event, and
- Goodie bags will be distributed at the last table as you exit event onto Route 37.
Traditional trick-or-treating is discouraged due to the increasing number of COVID-19 cases surrounding our community. Community members are encouraged to participate in the Trunk-or-Treat event, as it is one way to mitigate and prevent the spread of the coronavirus within Akwesasne—particularly, among our kids.
For those who choose to trick-or-treat, we ask that you please practice the following protective measures from the U.S. Center for Disease Control to make Halloween safe:
- Avoid direct contact with trick-or-treaters,
- Give out treats outdoors, if possible,
- Set up a station with individually bagged treats for kids to take,
- Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer frequently,
- Stay at least 6-feet apart from others,
- Wear a cloth mask, and
- Trick-or-Treat within your family or social bubbles.
Halloween is always a fun time and following the above safety measures will ensure that it will continue to be enjoyable and safe for everyone.
