Tribal Police in Akwesasne Awarded Grant from New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services

AKWESASNE — (Onerahtohkó:wa/May 16, 2024) The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police have been awarded a $857,657.00 grant from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) as part of the Law Enforcement Technology (LETECH) grant program.
This funding is part of a larger initiative announced by Governor Kathy Hochul, totaling $127 million, which will be distributed among the 378 law enforcement agencies that applied across New York State.
This grant will enable the Tribal Police to modernize their operations and enhance their ability to effectively solve and prevent crime. The funds will be used to purchase state-of-the-art technology and equipment, inclusive of but not limited to:
- License plate readers
- Mobile and fixed surveillance cameras
- Computer-aided dispatch systems
- Advanced software solutions
- Unmanned aerial vehicles (drones)
- Gunshot detection devices
- Smart equipment for patrol vehicles and police officers
Mathew Rourke, SRMT Chief of Police stated, " I would like to thank the Governor's office for making the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police a direct recipient of grant funding. The new technology and equipment we will be able to purchase with these funds will greatly enhance our capabilities and help us to better serve and protect our community.”
