Summary: Under the direction of the Director, the Tourism Activities Officer will work with the Economic Development team on execution of strategic tourism initiatives. The work involves communicating, coordinating and outreach duties to increase leisure and business travel to the Akwesasne community, for the overall benefit of Akwesasne’s local economy.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:

  • To serve as an Economic Development representative; collaborate with community groups, local businesses, associations, non-profits and internal/external working committees to promote tourism initiatives that benefit the local economy.
  • Promote small business development within Akwesasne’s tourism industry.
  • Provide continual support to new and existing tourism partners by sharing & recommending business support and professional development opportunities.
  • Serves as a liaison between tour operators, planners, travel agents, and accommodations, attractions, meeting facilities, conference centers, restaurants, etc. Referring visitors and organizations to persons/areas of interest within Akwesasne.
  • Assists in the preparation of the annual budget for the tourism program needs within Economic Development;
  • Conducts market research and disseminates data on tourism trends and the economic impact of tourism to Akwesasne. Stays abreast of tourism information within the surrounding counties and other Native Nations.
  • Prepares reports, responds to inquiries and provides comment on tourism-related feedback, from partners, tour operators, community members, and other stakeholders to improve Economic Development services and efficiencies.
  • Keeps informed on current trends in the travel/tourism industry and of the uses and capabilities of Economic Development.
  • Provides assistance in the development of short- and long-term tourism strategic plans, and recommendations to achieve such goals.
  • Seeks & prepares funding opportunities to support ongoing tourism initiatives, training and capacity building.
  • Maintains databases of contacts, leads and other related data; in preparation for quarterly newsletters, other communications (happenings, things to do, events, etc.) to area stakeholders.
  • Plans and coordinates business after hours events, mixers, and other gatherings to maintain and strengthen partnerships.
  • Routine travel will be required. Participates in travel trade, leisure shows and tourism conferences, chamber functions and business after hours events.
  • Must be able to meet the public as a representative of the Tribe, maintaining high ethical, honest, moral standards and professionalism.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position holds no supervisory responsibility.

Education and/or Experience:

  • Associate's degree (A.S.) from a two-year College or University in Business Administration, Tourism & Hospitality, Communications, or related field AND
  • 3 years of related experience and/or training; OR
  • Certificate in a related field AND
  • 5 years related experience.
