SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Assistant Program Manager, the Registered Nurse is responsible for overseeing the medical and clinical conditions of the individuals. Interacts with and works closely with the individual’s physicians and medical specialists, to promote their medical wellbeing.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Responsible to insure Medication Administration by certified, direct care staff:
- Trains and certifies program staff per the New York State-approved medication administration course; maintains certification records for staff and ensures staff are re-certified before the due date in accordance with Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) guidelines.
- Review the Medication Administration Records (MAR) and medication packages weekly to ensure proper dispensing of medications and treatments.
- Identify medication errors and follow policy for counseling staff, filling out the appropriate forms and notifying appropriate personnel in a timely manner.
- Evaluate minor medical problems and implement proper treatment and follow-up for all individuals.
- Ensure that all labs, x-rays or other test results are placed in the individual's electronic file. Make appropriate requests to obtain any missing information.
- Accept on-call responsibilities as required per program protocols.
- During designated on-call hours, must remain available by telephone or cell phone to respond to emergencies/staff medical concerns relating to the care of the individuals.
- Must complete all paperwork relating to emergency care provided and notify others of actions taken per program standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Ensure monthly doctor orders are correct, complete, in MAR, and initialed.
- Complete all paperwork required to implement medical/pharmacological orders received by MD’s.
- Ensure an appropriate amount of medication and valid dates are available for each individual.
- Responsible to establish and maintain required medical appointments for all individuals.
- Ensure paperwork is complete and provide transportation of individuals to medical appointment(s).
- Complete a self-administered assessment to determine the individuals' capabilities for medication self-administration.
- Complete semi-annual nursing assessments.
- Ensure that medical equipment is adequate and in good repair.
- Ensure adequate inventory of all medical supplies and medications.
- Attend annual reviews, special treatment meetings, and other meetings as requested.
- Respect the individuals’ rights and maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Follow safety and infection control procedures at all times.
- Other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- Current NYS licensure as a Registered Nurse.
- One year experience working in the field of developmental disabilities is PREFERRED.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Strong oral and written communication skills required. Must have excellent computer skills, including Word, Excel, and experience with varying databases.
This position mandates employees to report to or remain at work in the event of an emergency, crisis situation, or staff shortage until relieved by their immediate supervisor.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license in accordance with the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Fleet Policy.
