SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Transfer Station Solid Waste Manager, the Recycling Coordinator will proactively work with staff and customers to help: establish, coordinate and promote waste diversion. This is a professional environmental position requiring the development, monitoring and evaluation of activities related to the Tribe's recycling and waste reduction programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide analytical and administrative support by: conducting research and analysis, waste audits, and surveys. Maintain spreadsheets and prepare reports of recycling materials collected and shipped to processing companies. Provide regular input on all account activity, including status and call reports on a weekly basis.
  • Oversee recycling pick-up/drop-off to ensure compliance with the SRMT Solid Waste Code and work with the Compliance Department to investigate Code violations and incidents of illegal dumping.
  • Responsible for: initiating recycling and reuse programs; identify waste problem areas; determine container types, sizes, and locations; and identify/provide training to employees on recycling/reuse and safe recycling procedures.
  • Supports communication of the solid waste program objectives by preparing articles for the newsletter, social media and staff announcements to educate employees and the community on recycling and reuse initiatives. In addition, the recycling coordinator is responsible for all client communications, conflict resolution, and compliance on client deliverables. All of which will be handled in a friendly and courteous manner.
  • Participate in public education and outreach as well as special events activities with the Environment Division such as Earth Day and recycling/reduce/reuse activities. Prepare and deliver presentations, brochures, workshops, training, and education of customers, Tribal employees and schoolchildren, on the latest recycling/reduce/reuse initiatives.
  • Responsible for tribal recycling program activities for coordination of the house-hold hazardous waste collection.
  • Participate in pilot studies to evaluate strategies that may increase recycling, waste reduction, collection efficiency, and home composting programs. Determine markets for recyclable products and make recommendations to management on program enhancements.
  • Assist in preparing grant applications for recycling programs or program enhancements. Prepares progress reports for any grants awarded.
  • Ensure proper retrieval and disposal of recyclable materials and handling of required documentation and recordkeeping of collected material.
  • Ensure the recycling facility and its operations comply with all relevant safety and quality standards.
  • Operate vehicles and equipment to move or store recyclable materials. Operate recycling processing equipment, such as sorters, balers, crushers, and granulators, to sort and process materials.
  • Perform light maintenance and minor repairs on collection vehicles and equipment.
  • Serves as the back up to the Operations Supervisor and/or the Program Manager when needed and performs other related duties as required.
  • Exhibit a friendly and courteous manner when dealing with our employees, fellow associates and the clients served.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED AND
  • Three (3) years of environmental technician, solid waste management and client service work experience will be considered.

OR

  • An Associate Degree with coursework in environmental science or biological studies AND
  • One (1) years’ experience in the recycling profession.

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science or a closely related field.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of solid waste, recycling and reuse methods, procedures and equipment.
  • Maintain the ability to work as a team member;
  • Ability to obtain a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) is preferred
  • Must obtain RCRA training and certification within six months of employment;
  • May be required to work weekends and evening hours;
  • May be required to travel for training and workshops;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office (including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook);
  • Ability to effectively manage client relationships. Interact effectively with individuals from diverse social, cultural, and economic backgrounds. Work independently and make critical decisions;
  • Ability to perform physical requirements of the position with or without reasonable accommodations and lift up to (50) pounds;
  • A general understanding of: applicable Federal, State and Local legislation and regulations related to materials management; general terminology regarding waste, recycling, and resource management; product characterization and materials identification.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Possession of a valid Driver License in accordance with Fleet Policy.
