SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Laboratory Supervisor, the Laboratory Technician is responsible for performing a wide variety of laboratory procedures on blood and other body fluids in chemistry, hematology, microbiology, urinalysis and clinical microscopy to obtain data for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of disease.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

· Performs a wide variety of testing procedures of varying complexities in accordance with approved techniques and standards

· Be knowledgeable and capable of performing phlebotomy techniques on all age groups

· Logs in all specimens collected and received by patients and other medical staff

· Prepares daily worksheets for each department of the lab

· Be knowledgeable of all basic laboratory methods and safety standards

· Performs quality control testing on all tests done in the lab on a daily basis or monthly schedule

· Know the course of action if quality control results are not with acceptable limits

· Is able to troubleshoot lab equipment when issues with instrumentation arise as well as be able to work with remote technical support if required

· Monitors temperature and humidity for all sections of the lab on a daily basis

· Performs preventative maintenance on all lab equipment and instrumentation to safeguard functionality as well as to monitor for any defects or deviations of standards

· Performs biannual linearity/calibration testing on instrumentation

· Prepares all samples for in-house testing as well as those being sent out to reference labs

· Keeps track of samples sent out to reference labs and the receipt of their corresponding results

· Manually enters results of all samples performed at other labs in the electronic health records

· Reviews point-of-care worksheets for accuracy on a regular basis or as needed

· Tallies totals of patient testing for monthly reports

· Participates in mandatory blind proficiency testing on a regular basis periodically throughout the year and competency testing annually

· Maintains a clean work area and disinfects all work surfaces daily or as needed

· Monitors and restocks phlebotomy and laboratory supplies as needed

· Assists in preparing lab orders for upcoming appointments

· Assist in making reminder calls to patients for upcoming appointments when necessary

 

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: There are no supervisor requirements for this position.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

· Associates degree (A. A.) from two-year College or University

in Medical Laboratory Technology or equivalent. AND

· Valid Clinical Laboratory Technician certification from the University of the State of New York Education Department Office of the Professions.

· ASCP registered PREFERRED.

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Strong oral and written communication skills required. Communicates in a clear manner, provides pertinent information to the Lab Supervisor and colleagues regularly. Competent phlebotomy and multitasking skills are strongly encouraged.

 

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

 

The successful candidate must complete a PPD test.
