SUMMARY: Under the general direction of the Head Cook, the Cook Aide is responsible for assisting the Head Cook in the preparation of well balanced, nutritional meals daily. The Cook Aide is responsible for preparing food as directed by a Head Cook and ensuring the quality of different dishes. This person is also responsible for ensuring the safety of the children by following all health and safety policies regarding food storage, preparation and service.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Adhere to all policies, standards and procedures as per Tribal Personnel Policies, CACFP regulations, Head Start Performance Standards, NYS OCFS Child Care Licensing Regulations, and all other applicable regulations pertaining to health, safety and sanitation.
  • Assists in the preparation of foods and baked goods in accordance with the CACFP (Child and Adult Care Food Program) requirements, the ELC Policies & Procedures, Menus and Recipes.
  • Assists with forecasting the menu far enough ahead to minimize the need for food substitutions; when substitutions are necessary helps to serve food of equivalent nutritional value.
  • Assists with daily set up of carts, delivering food to classrooms, setting up for nutrition activities, preparing food for field trips, daily/weekly inventory and completes food orders if needed.
  • Helps to maintain established standards of sanitation, safety, food preparation and storage, including: storing food and supplies in appropriate areas; washing dishes; cleaning refrigerators, stove, bins, cupboards and other kitchen equipment and utensils; and, sweeping and mopping kitchen floors.
  • With the guidance of the Head Cook, assists in modifying menus and recipes to prepare foods that meet the developmental needs of all children and the medical and feeding needs of children with disabilities or food allergies.
  • Attends and participates in grantee-sponsored trainings, center pre-service and other continuing education, career and professional development opportunities.
  • Participates in the agency's self-evaluation process and grantee monitoring visits and complies with any applicable corrective action plan requirements.
  • Participates in all meetings, events, emergency drills and environmental safety activities planned by the Early Learning Center as requested.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: There are no supervisory responsibilities for this position.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of high school diploma or GED; AND
  • Must have at least 6 months experience in a food service setting.
  • Preferred certificate in culinary, nutrition/baking and/or dietetics.
  • Preferred that the applicant possesses a current Food Handlers Certificate at the time of hire, if not they must obtain it within 3 months.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Exhibit a friendly and courteous manner while maintaining a high level of professionalism in relationships with children, families, visitors, colleagues, other staff members, management, and community members.
  • Demonstrate skills in preparing nutritious, good tasting foods in an appealing manner.
  • Knowledge of the CACFP and child nutrition
  • Positively deal with crisis situations. Deal with hostile, aggressive persons or situations.
  • Be aware and sensitive to the needs that may arise when handling stressful and demanding circumstances. Immediate debriefing will be made available.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe working environment in the ELC.
  • Promote a positive image of the ELC and foster a climate of respect and integrity.

REASONING ABILITY:

  • Ability to implement regulations that govern programs for young children; acknowledging that all staff will cooperate to implement a program that far exceeds minimum regulations.
  • Ability to ensure that the rights and needs of children are the highest priority, while also recognizing the needs of other family members.
  • To contribute to the ongoing review, evaluation and modification of services as needed by the community, families and children.
  • To provide information about the services of the program to the community and to engage staff in cooperative problem solving, planning and continuing evaluation of themselves and the program.
