PRESS RELEASE For immediate release: For information contact: Mohawk Environment Review Code AKWESASNE The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe has issued its most comprehensive environmental protection and regulation ordinance, the Mohawk Environmental Review Code (MERC). Starting today through December 27, 2006, the MERC will be available for a 45-day public comment period. The Tribe and its environment division has been working to establish this formal environmental code in an effort to ensure adequate protection for the land, air, and water resources within the Tribe’s territory. This important law stipulates the review process and the required permits developers must obtain before development can begin. Over the past decade, the Akwesasne community has witnessed a significant amount of commercial growth by both tribal members and outside interests. The Tribe’s implementation of the MERC seeks to avoid any threats to the environment and will ensure the health and safety of its residents. Before the MERC is adopted by the tribe as law, it will undergo a public review process beginning with the comment period. After the 45-day period closes, comments will be reviewed, responses issued, and the language may be amended according to community needs and concerns. A public hearing will then be scheduled at which time the Tribe will present the proposed law to the community. The tribe encourages members of the community, entrepreneurs, and prospective developers to review the document and submit their comments. Copies of the MERC are available for review at the Akwesasne Library and the Tribal Community Building and can also be viewed on the Environment Division’s website: www.srmtenv.org. Submit written comments to the Environment Division at
