TRIBAL VOTERS REJECT SIX CHIEF SYSTEM
3 Chief Government Supported by Membership

ST. REGIS MOHAWK TRIBE - The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe has voted to deny changing the Three Chief System to a new Six Chief System. In a community referendum held at the Tribe’s Community Building on Saturday, April 5th, eligible tribal voters had the opportunity to accept or reject the restructuring. The actual referendum question was, DO YOU APPROVE OF CHANGING THE CURRENT THREE CHIEF SYSTEM TO A SIX CHIEF SYSTEM? YES OR NO.

The Tribe’s Election Board has released the unofficial results as follows: 50 “Yes,” 184 “No,” with 2 spoiled/voided ballots.  The Board will certify official results on April 14, 2008.

The second ballot, which presented three options to accomplish the restructuring was not considered since voters were against the change.

The Governance Committee will continue to study and recommend tribal reforms to make the Tribal Government more open and transparent so that community members can participate in the legislative process and Council decisions.  More changes will be presented to the community in the future.
