LET'S GET HEALTHY PROGRAM DIABETES-PREVENTION PROGRAM


Tsitewatakari:tat, Let's Get Healthy Program is a primary prevention program promoting healthier lifestyles. The long term goal is to reduce the prevalence of Type 2 diabetes in Mohawk People of Akwesasne. The initiatives began with a 1990-91 pilot study, spearheaded by the St. Regis Mohawk Health Services and the University of Vermont.

From 1993-1998, Tsitewatakari:tat has been a unique community driven effort, represented by a Mohawk Coalition for Diabetes-Prevention. The purpose is to promote increased physical activity, reduced consumption of fatty foods and decrease excessive weight gain in Mohawk children.
