TSITEWATAKARI:TAT
LET'S GET HEALTHY PROGRAM DIABETES-PREVENTION PROGRAM
Tsitewatakari:tat, Let's Get Healthy Program is a primary prevention program
promoting healthier lifestyles. The long term goal is to reduce the prevalence
of Type 2 diabetes in Mohawk People of Akwesasne. The initiatives began
with a 1990-91 pilot study, spearheaded by the St. Regis Mohawk Health Services
and the University of Vermont.
From 1993-1998, Tsitewatakari:tat has been a unique community driven effort,
represented by a Mohawk Coalition for Diabetes-Prevention. The purpose is
to promote increased physical activity, reduced consumption of fatty foods
and decrease excessive weight gain in Mohawk children.
