The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe is working towards attaining self-sufficiency and to better serve the needs of Akwesasne community members. The keys to self-sufficiency are sound economic development and the provision of essential government services to tribal members. The Tribe strives to strengthen tribal government, while at the same time maintaining traditional Mohawk values.

Since 1973, the Tribal Council has received federal and state funds for a variety of tribally administered programs, all of which employ primarily Mohawk people. Today, the Tribe administers more than 180 state and federal-funded programs that provide essential programs and services to the Akwesasne community.

The Tribe, its two gaming operations--Akwesasne Mohawk Casino and Mohawk Bingo Palace and the First Americans IGA directly employ nearly 1,400 Natives and non-Natives, making it one of the largest employers in Northern New York State. It's 120 tribally registered business employ hundreds more and licensed enterprises provide vital revenue that supports health and senior services, Boys & Girls Club, fire and police departments, and a host of other community programs.
